After Halloween: Sugar, Sleep and How Your Body Recovers

The lolly bowl is half empty, the costumes are packed away, and you might be feeling it. Foggy mornings, a sugar hangover, sleep that did not quite do its job. Here is the thing to remember. Your body runs on energy, made by tiny power plants in every cell, and it works best when your lifestyle matches what your genes were built for. Your ancestors rarely met a bowl of lollies. The good news is your body is built to bounce back, and a few ancestral habits help it get there.

Your body already knows how to reset

Your body is a self-healing, self-regulating system, and a current of energy runs through every cell. Our genes have barely changed in thousands of years, but our days have. Sugar on tap, hours of sitting, bright screens at midnight. When your lifestyle matches what you are genetically built for, your body does what it does best. Our job is not to force it. It is to remove what gets in the way and give it what it needs.

Four ancestral habits to try today

Eat real food first. Start with eggs, or leftover meat or fish, plus a handful of berries or nuts. Whole foods like these are what your body is built to run on, and they steady your energy without the spike and crash.

Drink a big glass of water when you wake up, then keep sipping through the day. Plain water is the drink your body was built for.

Get outside for 10 minutes of morning light. Your ancestors woke with the sun, and that light helps set your body clock, which sets you up for better sleep tonight.

Move the day, not just the hour. Break up long sitting every 30 minutes or so, and take a 10 minute walk after your biggest meal. We were built to roam and forage, not sit still for hours.

A 2 minute wind down for better sleep

When the sun went down, your ancestors had firelight, not screens. Copy it. Dim the lights and put screens away 30 minutes before bed. Then lie on your back, one hand on your belly, and breathe in through your nose and out slowly, about six breaths a minute, for two minutes. Slow breathing tells your nervous system you are safe, and a body that feels safe moves out of survival and into repair.

Also keep caffeine to the morning and your bedroom cool and dark, the way a cave would be.

Spinal hygiene: brush your spine like your teeth

Every animal stretches the moment it wakes, and you can too. Stand tall, then arch and round your back, bend gently side to side and turn slowly each way. A couple of minutes each day lets every stiff segment remember how to glide. Move within comfort and let your body set the pace.
